Han-Na Chang

Cellist Han-Na Chang has established an extraordinary international career, performing regularly on the most prestigious concert stages of Europe, North America and Asia. She first won recognition for her exceptional musical gifts in 1994 when at the age of 11 she won both the First Prize and the Contemporary Music Prize at the Fifth Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris.

In 1995, at the age of 12, Han-Na Chang made her first recording with Mstislav Rostropovich conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. This album brought her the Young Artist of the Year Award of the ECHO Klassik-Deutsche Schallplattenpreis.

Miss Chang’s recording of the Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante and the Cello Sonata with Antonio Pappano directing the LSO has been awarded the Best Concerto Recording of the Year Award in 2003 by the ECHO Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, the Cannes Classical Award, the Caecilia Prize and the Gramophone Magazine.

A keen recitalist, Miss Chang can be heard regularly in the most prestigious recital series around the world. The upcoming recitals will bring her back to Los Angeles, London, Lisbon, Madrid, Sydney, Amsterdam, Dublin, Athens, Seoul and Tokyo.

Miss Chang has collaborated closely with such conductors as Giuseppe Sinopoli, Lorin Maazel, Mariss Jansons, Riccardo Muti, Antonio Pappano, Zubin Mehta, Herbert Blomstedt, Mstislav Rostropovich, Yuri Temirkanov, Christoph Eschenbach, Charles Dutoit, Seiji Ozawa, and Myung-Whun Chung. Miss Chang continues to collaborate successfully with many of the world’s great orchestras, including Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, London Symphony, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Chicago Symphony, Montreal Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, and Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Han-Na Chang frequently gives free concerts inviting underprivileged children who would otherwise have no opportunity of attending concerts. She also regularly organizes and performs concerts for children in South Korea, her native country, and in 2009, founded her annual summer festival “Absolute Classic” in partnership with the Sungnam Arts Center. She currently serves as the Roving Goodwill Ambassador for the Korean Red Cross.

Han-Na Chang has studied privately with both Mischa Maisky and Mstislav Rostropovich. She has studied philosophy at Harvard University, and is currently studying conducting with Lorin Maazel.

Han-Na Chang appears for the first time with the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER.
