The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is holding auditions for the position of concertmaster, to join the orchestra from the Special Project Mahler 8 (May 2020) onwards (as concertmaster starting with the Summer Tour 2020). This position is designed for a duration of 2 to 3 years; details will be mutually agreed.
Eligible participants must be European citizens and born in 1995 or later. The concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is expected to possess excellent musical and technical skills, substantial orchestral experience, as well as leadership abilities and a high sense of responsibility. This is a non-remunerated position, however, all expenses related to the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester tours are covered by the orchestra.
Auditions will take place in Vienna, Austria, between February 25th and 28th 2020.

The travel and accommodation arrangements of the invited candidates will be dealt with directly by the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. If the participation is cancelled after February 10th 2020, the applicant must cover all costs for travels and accommodation.
The jury of the audition will be presided by Prof. Werner Hink, former concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Head of Strings of the GMJO. Other jury members include Vahid Khadem-Missagh, concertmaster of the Tonkünstler-Orchester and former concertmaster of the GMJO, Prof. Anton Sorokow, concertmaster of the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra, and Tobias Wögerer, Assistant Conductor of the GMJO.
A complete list of the members of the jury will be provided to the applicants upon request. The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester will reserve the right to make a preselection. All candidates will be informed by February 5th if they are invited to play the Concertmaster Audition.
The concertmaster audition will be organised in two rounds. After the first round, the jury will select the candidates eligible to take part in the second round. The decision of the jury is final, and there is no right of appeal.

· FIRST ROUND
Each candidate will have to perform:
a) The 1st movement of one of the following concertos:
- L. v. Beethoven: op. 61
- J. Brahms: op. 77
- A. Dvořák: op. 53
- J. Sibelius: op. 47
- P. I. Tchaikovsky: op. 35
b) The following orchestral excerpts:
- J. S. Bach: St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, no. 39: Aria (Alto): Erbarme Dich (until 1 bar after “8”)
- J. Brahms: Symphony No. 1, op. 68, 2nd movement
- N. Rimski-Korsakov: Sheherazade, op. 35, 2nd and 3rd movement
· SECOND ROUND
The selected candidates will have to perform:
a) W. A. Mozart: Violin Concerto KV 218 or KV 219 (1st and 2nd movements)

b) The following orchestral excerpts:
- Richard Strauss: Ein Heldenleben, op. 40, Des Helden Gefährtin
- Richard Strauss: Der Bürger als Edelmann, op. 60, no. 6, Auftritt und Tanz der Schneider

An accompanist will be provided by the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester.
