Ben Gernon

Hannah Taylor

British conductor Ben Gernon studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he held the Conducting Fellowship, graduating in 2011. In May 2013 Ben conducted Camerata Salzburg in a programme of Maxwell Davies, Mozart and Beethoven to win the prestigious Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award. 

As part of the prize, he will conduct the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester at the Salzburg Festival on August 17. In the same Festival this summer he conducts an arrangement of Die Entführung aus dem Serail with the Salzburg Singers Academy. Forthcoming UK engagements include with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the St Magnus Festival, London Philharmonic Future Firsts and London Symphony Orchestra as part of their Discovery series. 

In recent seasons he made his BBC Proms debut conducting Tansy Davies’ Composers Portrait and he has conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, London Philharmonic Future Firsts and Scottish Chamber Orchestra education projects.

He is professor of Musicality at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is mentored by Sian Edwards. He was also mentored by Sir Colin Davis until the great conductor's death in April this year. In 2012 he reached the finals of the renowned LSO Donatella Flick conducting competition.
