Christoph Eschenbach will lead the Summer Tour 2014 of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester.
Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra and of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., and former Music Director of the Houston Symphony, of the Orchestre de Paris, and of the Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as former Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra, Christoph Eschenbach will work for the first time with the GMJO.
He will be joined by his long-time artistic friend, pianist Tzimon Barto, appearing for the second time with the GMJO, for performances of Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto op. 16 and for the world-premiere of German composer Wolfgang Rihm’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a joint commission of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, the Salzburg Festival, and the National Symphony Orchestra, which promises to be one of the musical highlights of the summer season.
The tour programmes also include Olivier Messiaen’s Les offrandes oubliées, Peter I. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, and Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7.
Following the traditional residency period in our partner-city of Bozen/Bolzano and at the Salzburg Festival, with concerts in both cities, the GMJO will then embark on an extensive tour, performing at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (Hamburg and Lübeck), the Stresa and Rimini Festivals, the Semperoper Dresden, the Rheingau Festival (Kloster Eberbach), as well as in Essen and Cologne.
As in previous years, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester will also take part, at the beginning of the tour, in the award-winner’s concert of the Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award (YCA) of which the GMJO is a partner since the first edition in 2010. Young French conductor Maxime Pascal, the winner of the 2014 edition, will lead the GMJO in a programme consisting of works by Debussy, Chausson, and Stravinsky.
The Summer Tour 2014 of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is dedicated to the memory of our founder and Music Director, Claudio Abbado, who sadly passed away earlier this year. His artistic vision, as well as his active and generous commitment to the younger generation of musicians, will remain our challenge and guiding principle for the future.
