The 2011 Easter Tour, with its 13 concerts and two programmes, which are exclusively dedicated to the work of Gustav Mahler and illuminate all periods of his work, will take the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER into seven European countries. With Philippe Jordan conducting, Thomas Hampson will perform selected songs from the period of “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” and will be heard together with the German tenor Burkhard Fritz in the “Lied von der Erde”. In addition, the Symphony no.1 in d major as well as the Adagio from the unfinished Symphony no. 10 in f sharp major will be on the programme.
As always, the most important concert halls in Europe are among the tour stations of the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER: three concerts in the Musikverein in Vienna, two in the Fundaçao Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, the Megaron Athens and the Lingotto Turin as well as performances at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris and in the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid underline the exceptional position of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. As in 2008 and 2009 the partner for the residency period will be the Festival Interlaken Classics, which will also organise a special concert with the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER conducted by David Afkham.
